"I think this year might be a little bit worse than an average year, " said Dr. Geoffrey Leung, medical director for Riverside University Health System's community clinics. The region is getting hit by wind and dust just as everything is in peak bloom. The top three most common maladies now are allergies, eye irritations and skin sensitivity, Leung said. Allergy symptoms include a runny or stuffy nose, sneezing, sore throat, itchy or irritated eyes, and sometimes general malaise including headaches and fatigue. "If you've ever seen someone with really bad allergies, they look like they're barely able to function, " Leung said. At the same time, temperature variations — unseasonably cool one day and scorchingly hot soon after — might lead to colds. "There's always been a question of whether extreme temperature changes can increase the risk for developing a cold. However, we do not have any good scientific proof that this occurs, " he added. Allergy symptoms mimic cold symptoms, so people who've never suffered from allergies before may confuse allergic reactions with a cold.
