I duly received my score 5 weeks later and found out that I did better than expected. It's quite possible that fight-or-flight nerves simply made a difficult situation worse. I'm sure our hunter-gatherer ancestors would get a good chuckle out of that. As to whether the subject score matters, I have no idea. My uncontroversial, unoriginal guess is that the general GRE (verbal/AW) matters more for first-cut, and then maybe subject test carries a little weight later on, especially for deciding between comparable candidates. But I have no solid evidence (empirical or anecdotal) to back this up, so my conclusion is do the best you can, and if your score isn't too high, don't give up. If I were on the committee, I'd put much, much, much (did I say much? ) more weight on writing sample, SOPs, and rec letters. As we all know, a test that attempts to grill undergrads on literature ranging over 4000 years is equal parts absurd and sad. I hope it's done away with in the future. I don't feel proud that I scored well.

A test intended to meet the needs of a particular department should be constructed specifically to measure the knowledge and skills the department considers important. A standardized test, such as the GRE Literature in English Test, allows comparisons of students from different institutions with different programs on one measure of competence in literature. Ideally, a department should not only investigate the relationships between the success of students in advanced study and several measures of competence, but also conduct a systematic evaluation of the test's predictive effectiveness after accumulating sufficient records of the graduate work of its students.

The critical questions test the ability to read a literary text perceptively. Students are asked to examine a given passage of prose or poetry and to answer questions about meaning, form and structure, literary techniques, and various aspects of language. The test is divided into four parts: literary analysis (40 to 55 percent); identification (15 to 20 percent); cultural and historical contexts (20 to 25 percent); and history and theory of literary criticism (10 to 15 percent). Mathematics GRE test The test has about 66 multiple-choice questions drawn from undergraduate-level courses. Approximately 50 percent of the questions involve calculus. The remaining areas of the test cover areas of mathematics currently studied by the majority of undergraduates.
