I have a 2 tb wd external drive and a macbook from around 2012. Everything was fine, i would back up files on it with no issue, until I thought I could use it to save a time machine backup file (my macbook hd is only 250gb). Ever since then it rarely mounts. I called apple and i unchecked the box in time machine to automatically back it up, updated my operating system and nothing. Apple wants to tell me it's a hardware issue but before I fully upgraded my os it had mounted 3 times in the last week but this is 3 times after trying to connect and reconnect many times. So assuming I cant get it to mount after reinstalling my operating system (their final suggestion) what can I do? How can I access what i have on there? I have about 90 gbs of music I'd like to salvage. Thank you for your time.

Check the box next to the drive letter. Then check any folders or files you specifically don't want to backup. Click Enable Backup. Once you do this, backups will be automatic from that point on. That's it, you're done! If the drive starts giving you trouble, keep in mind that it is under warranty for 2 years from the date of purchase. Hey there! A couple of days ago I installed my first NAS, and my dear MacBook Pro started getting sluggish and then suddenly restarting with a "Your computer restarted because of a problem" black screen on restart (kernel panic). It restarts about 3 times a day now and, before doing that, the OS gets so slow it can't be used. After the kernel panic, the MacOS presents an error to report to Apple, which I've pasted below. These issues seem to have started happening right after I installed a Synology NAS. Specs below. I'm using SMB to connect the volume, mounting 3 shared folders and also connecting to one shared folder dedicated to automatic Time Machine backups via Time Machine itself. It all works on the surface, but the OS crashes randomly. As I type, for example the touch-bar has a delay of about 5 seconds, after which all the previously unrecognised touches happen simultaneously. The browser window is very slow. The Activity Monitor won't even open. I know it'll restart soon. Edit: it did.
